Where to stay in Dominical and Playa Hermos/Jaco

It has been around 20 yrs that I have not been to Costa Rica.....anyways, I know alot has changed.
Last time I was there, there were no hotel/cabinas on that stretch of beach. I will be going for about 1 week at the end of July. Can anyone recommend a cheap place to stay at in Dominical, Playa Hermosa or Jaco? I don't need a spa or fancy place, just a safe, clean place to sleep. Does anyone out there have any suggestions? What about renting a car? Rent it here beforehand or rent it over there? Any help would be highly appreciated. I know that alot of you guys get to travel down there alot and might have some inside info.
